With
so many DJ/Entertainment services to choose from, finding one that’s perfect
for your special event can be stressful. What qualities should you look for in
a company? What questions should you ask? How do you know they are everything
they say they are? Here are 9 tips to bear in mind when hiring a DJ
Service.
1. Are they professional and personable? A DJ/Emcee does much more
than just play music. It’s likely that the DJ will act as your master of
ceremonies and keep the evening running smoothly. You want your DJ to be
professional, have fun and interact with your guests without being overbearing or
cheesy. You can normally get a good feel for this when you meet with them.
2. Are they a reputable company? There are a few things you can check to assure the
DJ service is reputable. Are they affiliated with any industry associations like
the American Disc Jockey Association (ADJA) or similar? Do they have a professional presence on
websites like theknot.com or weddingwire.com?
Check out their website; does it look professional and fully outline the
services they offer? Don’t be afraid to ask questions.
3. Do they have references & testimonials from past clients? You have heard the term
“the proof is in the pudding”. Asking
for references is one of the most important things to remember when
interviewing a DJ Service. Checking these or asking for a testimonial from a
satisfied client will give you peace of mind that “they are who they say they
are”. Look on their Weddingwire.com profile to see what past clients have said.
4. Will you meet personally with the DJ/Entertainer that will be performing
at your event? When interviewing, ask if you can personally meet with the DJ that will
be at the reception (you would be surprised how many DJ services don’t do this).
This is one of the mort important nights of your life, so why shouldn’t you
meet with the person who will entertain you and your guests? I believe that getting
to know each bride & groom really makes a difference. The DJ should always
make you feel that your reception is the main priority, no matter what.
5. Will they help you plan & coordinate your reception? Your DJ should be well-educated
on the flow of a reception and how to keep it on track. Ask the DJ to run
through a typical reception format with you and if possible, to see an example
of a reception flow sheet. This will tell you if the DJ is familiar with events
like these. Also, many DJ companies now offer “online planning areas” which
will help you plan your reception.
6. Do they have an extensive music collection & are they knowledgeable about
all kinds of music? This should be a given, right? You would be amazed at the horror
stories I have heard over the years: “The DJ didn’t have the correct music” or “The
DJ didn’t have many of our requests”. During your meeting, ask to see the DJ’s
collection. Make sure they have the top music from all genres and decades.
7. What packages do they offer? Some companies will simply give you an hourly rate
while others offer 4-5 hour packages that cater specifically for wedding
receptions. A professional DJ service should always be up-front about costs and
explain exactly what you will receive. Whichever option you choose, make sure
you understand exactly what you are getting.
8. How will the music be suited to you and your guests? Some elements of a
wedding reception are always the same (first dance, cake cutting). But that isn’t
the case for your music. During your meeting, the DJ should develop a good
understanding of what you are looking for and give you an idea of what to
expect on the night. Music choices you discuss might change depending on how
the DJ reads the crowd. I suggest choosing no more than 10-15 special songs or
MUST PLAYs. You are hiring a DJ because he is an experienced professional so
give him flexibility to react to your guests on the night.
9. Do you have that "good feeling"?
The most important thing is how YOU feel about the DJ Company. You
should make a decision on their professionalism, their music knowledge and how
well you feel they are going to mesh with you and your guests. I always think
it’s important to go with your gut feeling. Just remember, a DJ is not just
about the music; it is also about personality & professionalism.
Congratulations!
You are now educated and equipped to go out and find the DJ Service that
complements you and your guests for your big day! Just remember to ask the
right questions, be open-minded and go with your gut!
