9 Tips To Know Before Hiring Your Wedding DJ

With so many DJ/Entertainment services to choose from, finding one that’s perfect for your special event can be stressful. What qualities should you look for in a company? What questions should you ask? How do you know they are everything they say they are? Here are 9 tips to bear in mind when hiring a DJ Service.

1. Are they professional and personable? A DJ/Emcee does much more than just play music. It’s likely that the DJ will act as your master of ceremonies and keep the evening running smoothly. You want your DJ to be professional, have fun and interact with your guests without being overbearing or cheesy. You can normally get a good feel for this when you meet with them.

2. Are they a reputable company? There are a few things you can check to assure the DJ service is reputable. Are they affiliated with any industry associations like the American Disc Jockey Association (ADJA) or similar?  Do they have a professional presence on websites like theknot.com or weddingwire.com?  Check out their website; does it look professional and fully outline the services they offer? Don’t be afraid to ask questions.

3. Do they have references & testimonials from past clients? You have heard the term “the proof is in the pudding”.  Asking for references is one of the most important things to remember when interviewing a DJ Service. Checking these or asking for a testimonial from a satisfied client will give you peace of mind that “they are who they say they are”. Look on their Weddingwire.com profile to see what past clients have said.

4. Will you meet personally with the DJ/Entertainer that will be performing at your event?  When interviewing, ask if you can personally meet with the DJ that will be at the reception (you would be surprised how many DJ services don’t do this). This is one of the mort important nights of your life, so why shouldn’t you meet with the person who will entertain you and your guests? I believe that getting to know each bride & groom really makes a difference. The DJ should always make you feel that your reception is the main priority, no matter what.

5. Will they help you plan & coordinate your reception? Your DJ should be well-educated on the flow of a reception and how to keep it on track. Ask the DJ to run through a typical reception format with you and if possible, to see an example of a reception flow sheet. This will tell you if the DJ is familiar with events like these. Also, many DJ companies now offer “online planning areas” which will help you plan your reception.

6. Do they have an extensive music collection & are they knowledgeable about all kinds of music? This should be a given, right? You would be amazed at the horror stories I have heard over the years: “The DJ didn’t have the correct music” or “The DJ didn’t have many of our requests”. During your meeting, ask to see the DJ’s collection. Make sure they have the top music from all genres and decades.

7. What packages do they offer? Some companies will simply give you an hourly rate while others offer 4-5 hour packages that cater specifically for wedding receptions. A professional DJ service should always be up-front about costs and explain exactly what you will receive. Whichever option you choose, make sure you understand exactly what you are getting.

8. How will the music be suited to you and your guests? Some elements of a wedding reception are always the same (first dance, cake cutting). But that isn’t the case for your music. During your meeting, the DJ should develop a good understanding of what you are looking for and give you an idea of what to expect on the night. Music choices you discuss might change depending on how the DJ reads the crowd. I suggest choosing no more than 10-15 special songs or MUST PLAYs. You are hiring a DJ because he is an experienced professional so give him flexibility to react to your guests on the night.

9. Do you have that "good feeling"?
The most important thing is how YOU feel about the DJ Company. You should make a decision on their professionalism, their music knowledge and how well you feel they are going to mesh with you and your guests. I always think it’s important to go with your gut feeling. Just remember, a DJ is not just about the music; it is also about personality & professionalism.

Congratulations! You are now educated and equipped to go out and find the DJ Service that complements you and your guests for your big day! Just remember to ask the right questions, be open-minded and go with your gut!

Tips to the Perfect Wedding Toast

Did you know that public speaking is one of the biggest fears among Americans? Well, we don't actually know that for sure, but doesn't it seem that way? Over the past 12 years, we at Elite Entertainment of Florida know that when the time comes for your loved ones to give the all important wedding toast, we have seen the good, bad and ugly! It's a good thing we come together to create some essential tips for preparing and executing the perfect wedding toast!
  1. Plan & Practice: Have you ever heard "practice makes perfect"? Well, this is the most important step when preparing your wedding toast. Although you don't want the toast to sound "rehearsed", it is always good to write out the main points you want to talk about. This will allow you to stay on track but not sound like you are reading word-for-word.
  2. Keep it Short & Balanced: Have you ever been to a wedding and listened to a toast that goes on for 20 minutes? Well, we have! Although your guests understand it's a time to say a few nice words about the bride and groom, the toast really should be no more then five minutes. It will give you enough time for an:
    • Introduction: Welcome everyone and talk about how you know the bride AND groom
    • Short Story: This is a great time to bring in a quick little story about the bride/groom. Maybe it's how you met or something that gives people an idea of what kind of relationship you have. It can be funny, fun, inspirational, or just about anything else.
    • When 2 Become 1: Yes, snagging a Spice Girls song title may be a bit over board but this is the time when you talk about the couple. Talk about the nice things they bring out in each other or how when they are together, they make the world a better place.... you get the idea.
    • The Toast: Always remember to finish with a nice toast. I will talk more about this in tip number four.
  3.  Keep It Clean: Whatever you do, remember you are at a formal event with people of all ages. No one needs to hear the things you and your buddies did in college. Please keep your toast PG and remember, if you aren't sure if it's appropriate, it's most likely not.
  4. Remember to Finish with the Toast: There is nothing that makes us go "Dohh" more then someone who gives an amazing speech but then forget's to toast the bride and groom! This is why planning and practicing is essential to a toast. Always finish your tast with something similar to "Please raise your glasses and help me congratulate the bride and groom as they start their journey together as husband and wife". Again, this is just an example. I'm sure you can be a little more creative than that!
Having the honor and privilege of giving the toast at a wedding deserves your thought and planning. This is your moment to start the evening off right. IF you remember the tips above, we know you will be more confident and look like a pro! If you have any questions or would like more help, please contact us and we at Elite Entertainment of Florida will be happy to assist you!
